TMZ trashes community college with racist rant

When Miss Mexico and former Mt. SAC student Beatriz Cazares, 27, walked into the spotlights and microphones of the press in Hollywood, she greeted them with grace, style and enthusiasm. Little did she know that entertainment news show TMZ would not only ridicule her for being a Mexican without an accent, but would also go on to bash her for attending Mt. SAC Community College and pursuing a community college education.

Although the TMZ interview with Cazares may have consisted of other questions, producers chose to air only one: “How was it tonight?”

She gushed as she talked of her wonderful experience as a contestant in the Miss Queen of the Universe contest. Immediately after her response, TMZ commented on her nonexistent Mexican accent and went on to attack her for attending Mt. SAC. They continued using Mt. SAC as the brunt of their jokes, making fun of a community college education and throwing out insults like saying that only seven students have ever graduated the college. TMZ host Harvey Levin continued to laugh hysterically at the idea of someone attending a community college.

Their only chance at redemption was lost when one of their staff members admitted to attending the college, but even after his failed attempt to defend Mt. SAC, he joined his peers as they mocked not only Miss Mexico, but the more than 60,000 students attending Mt. SAC. Cazares said she was at a loss for words when she saw the TMZ footage that aired on Monday.

“Shame on them,” said Cazares. “It was really insulting. I was shocked and disgusted.” She said that discrediting someone’s reputation and talking bad against their education is unfair and that so many amazing people come out of community colleges.

“I feel very proud of this community college, especially the help,” Cazares said. “Don’t go putting down a community college. Some of us simply do not have the resources to attend a university.”

This is not the first time TMZ has been accused of racism. Kim Kardashian recently called out TMZ for being racist against her and Kanye West as an interracial couple. In 2012, TMZ interviewed the Mexican rock group Mana and asked them a racist question, “American rock bands get underwear thrown at them; do you get underwear thrown at you or Tapatio packets?”

As for the insults flung at Mt. SAC, the college is not only known for its academic achievements, but also for its outstanding athletics program, which has turned out NFL superstars such as Delanie Walker and Superbowl winners Antonio Pierce and Bruce Irvin and a stadium that will host the 2020 Olympic Trials.  Various programs, such as forensics, journalism, theatre, and music to name just a few, have gone on to win national competitions beating major universities for first place. The student success stories are endless, with transfer students going on to attend the most prestigious universities.

Jim Jenkins, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, was appalled.

“I think it’s always difficult to watch something where people who have an established voice within the system, [and] use that voice to put people down who don’t have the same voice,” said Jenkins. “Who knows what this achievement means to her, but it is hard won and hard worked for, and for them to mock it is rather pathetic.”

In response to the claim by TMZ that only seven students have graduated from Mt. SAC, last year alone, 2,100 students earned a degree, and 946 transferred to a four-year institution. TMZ could not be reached for comment.

Jenkins wanted to remind students of not only why they attend Mt. SAC, but also why the faculty and staff keep coming to work every day.

“Teachers, managers, and faculty deeply, profoundly, and genuinely care about their time here, no one is doing it for the money. It is for the opportunity to change [students] lives,” said Jenkins. “We believe in them and their potential, there is nothing more worthy of our time than their future, keep going.”

Cazares, who was born in Mexico and raised in California since the age of 3, is representing her native country as Miss Mexico in the Queen of the Universe 2014 pageant. She was pursuing a business degree at Mt. SAC and planned to transfer UCLA but put her plans on hold in the summer of 2013 to focus on the pageant. Cazares said she wants to be a role model for Hispanic women and children.

“If I can be a role model to anyone, I feel blessed,” Cazares said.

I attend Mt. SAC, transferred to a four year institution, and just received my acceptance for a doctor of veterinary medicine program. All of this would not have been possible without the wonderful faculty at Mt. SAC! Shame on tmz!

I have never liked the TMZ show, I feel it is a show that gives them the right to bully people. I have been going to Mt. Sac since 2-2011 because I needed to learn computers, like word, powerpoint, etc. I have been making excellant progress because of the teachers I have had and not only that since 9-2012 I have been in the work-study program and where I work on campus I get to meet different people and help them when I can. I like Mt. Sac very much and the teachers that work there. So TMZ before you bad mouth a community college check it out first, you may get a surprise.

I saw the video and was pretty shocked at the dialogue in TMZ’s ‘newsroom’.
I shook my head after viewing it.

As for those who attended Mt. SAC like myself and Ms Cazares, big thumbs up and kudos to the editors of Mountiewire for reporting this.

And lets not forget the awesome teachers, deans and staff who work endlessly to help the students get educated and move on to pursue their careers and dreams!!!

I am of hispanic heritage, have been stuck at Mt Sac for 4 years (finally transferring to a UC) and absolutely HATE TMZ, but I don’t see why what they said was “racist”. It just seems to me that Mt Sac is just pulling the racism card to attack TMZ’s character and shed light on the real issue they are upset about…the attack on our school.

Needless to say it is quite obvious (at least to me) that they were joking about 7 students graduating. Anyone with half a brain wouldn’t even need to do research to know that wasn’t true. While I still cannot stand TMZ, I admit I got a good laugh from the jokes they made about Mt Sac.

I’ve seen many successful people come out of community colleges, many are even better than universities because the professors get to know many students on a personal basis. So Harvey Levin, too bad we don’t all want to get jobs talking shit about people to make ourselves feel better. You and your loser team of morons. Shame on you & I laugh at your stupidity

We wonder why kids bully??????i will never ever watch TMZ.

OMG , I just watched the video .. that is such crap .. how rude and disrespectful they are to all the students that have gone there and graduated with high honors and went on to bigger and better schools to get the higher degrees .. I bet those circus clowns cant say that for themselves …
my daughter went to Mt. SAC for her AA, then transferred to UCR and got her Bachelors degree and is now living in NY, going to Columbia University getting Masters..
so TMZ … do your own homework before you criticize our local schools and amazing students and families that live here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TMZ is that snotty kid on the block who has to bash others to boost his own insecurity. What a pathetic segment to air about someone who is actually trying to be a superior role model! Go back to picking on Charlie Sheen.

  16. March 21, 2014

TMZ …Really , a staff of overweight no talent uneducated minimum wage gawkers and valley trash bimbo’s being used as a cast for the Hollywood shister of the century , Harvey is a putz and the show is trash tabloidism at its worst but losers watch it as background while their pathetic lives drag on in real time .

Not only am I one of many Mexican Americans and one of many students who go to Mt. Sac but after watching this video I am pretty insulted by the outcome. I didn’t find anything funny about the video at all. I don’t think this young woman who has worked so hard for her degree deserves to be stepped on by people who’s only job is to basically spy and ask questions on to celebrities basically not having a real day job. If she is getting stepped then we are getting stepped on as well. I am sure its nice that Faux is paying everyone at TMZ well.

As somebody who transferred from SAC to a “more prestigious” UC, I can honestly say I learned more from Community College than I did from the school that wrote its name on my B.A.

TMZ’s reporters are just jealous, ’cause they got their degrees from University of Phoenix.

What a disappointment, a program that I will most likely never watch again. To make fun of any school or students that are working to get a better education is shameful. I think its time for TMZ to get a higher education!

TMZ says a lot of racist remarks! What sucks is that they are part of the media which is very influential to people watching it. The message they send is that its ok to continue this type of discrimination. Im proud to say im one of those students that graduated with a degree at MTSAC and transferred out to a 4 yr. University. Shame on TMZ for trying to ridiculize MTSAC AND MEXICAN HERITAGE!

  21. March 22, 2014

Hello!! It’s TMZ! They’re JACKASSES! They make fun of everyone, with their sophomoric humor.

Harvey Levin…..didn’t he do some court show? Who cares what they have to say about Mt. SAC? This is our community and we’re proud of it.

Ms. Cazares is beautiful and obviously has more intelligence in her little pinky than the entire staff at TMZ, including that ambulance chaser Levin.

  22. Mt. Sac is lame
    March 22, 2014

Harvey Levine attended UC Santa Barbara, and graduated law school from the university of chicago (top 10 law school in us.) Compared to his educational background Mt. Sac is a joke. Also 2,100 students graduating out of 60,000 is not an achievement. That is roughly 1 in 30 for those of you taking math at Mt. Sac.

There is no racial attack against Mt. Sac, in fact the point of the joke was to show that the beauty pageant was just a regular under achieving American and does not deserve to be a celebrity.

  23. March 22, 2014

I will never watch TMZ again!

Let’s stop and think about this for a second. If we gave every opinion serious thought and took opinions to heart then we would be very unhappy individuals. Take for example Kanye West and Kim Kardashian or Justin Beiber (who I personally can’t stand) who are very heavily criticized by TMZ and other entertainment news outlets. Think if all that press about the them stopped, then they would lose part of their fame. Most famous people love being talked about whether it’s good or bad (Hey look we’re taking about them now). Some press is better than no press. Most famous people love press whether its bad or good. I honestly had no idea who Miss Mexico Beatriz Cazeres (which is sad since I am American-Mexican) was until TMZ showed me who she was. Also, it was her choice to speak to the paparazzi. Let’s get one straight, clear, and out of the way, I DON’T CONDONE OR APPROVE OF RACIST AND IGNORANT OPINIONS. But, they are opinions. Just opinions. Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Press is one of the many great freedoms this country has to offer. Whether my opinion or TMZ’s opinion carries any importance, that’s up to you to decide. IT’S YOUR CHOICE to watch TMZ. All this of course, is In my opinion.

I do wish Miss Mexico Beatriz Cazeres the very best and hope she continues to be a role model to anyone.

I am ashamed. I am of the Jewish faith and having a fellow Jew, Harvey Levin, be a part of this is like putting down the Jews that suffered from and were killed in the Holocaust. Damning words, insults and misconceptions misguided many normal upright citizens into believing that this group of people were not due their respect. Lies, misconstrued text and just plain denial of others achievements is what keeps the division among people. The TMZ crew need to just experience just one week or day in the life of a Mt. SAC student. The truth would be plain as day and they would have a very hard time disputing the facts of the following and how it pertains to our wonderful and caring college. “Doust thou know how to play the fiddle?” “No,” answered Themistocles, “but I understand the art of raising a little village into a great city.” (quote from Motto Masthead Emigrant Aid Journal)

Mt. SAC’s learning environment allows a student to enter small and leave great. The learning environment consists of an available Team Community that invests in students and encourages them to help each other.

I have been around the block a few times and as an older returning student and displaced worker, this learning environment has given me the opportunity to develop new skills, regain my confidence and as well as preparing the way for me to be an asset to the working environment for many years to come.

As a final note: does Mr. Levin have the solutions of how to accomplish a four-year degree without having the knowledge base and maturity that a community college, like Mt. SAC gives to students who will be able to facilitate quicker through the university system in achieving a four-year degree.

Also one more thing, Mr. Levin your group needs some warm and inviting Mt. SAC hospitality!
