The L.A.M.B.D.A. Student Association is holding their second official Taboo Dance Party in Bldg. 9C today until 7 p.m. complete with food, drinks, a D.J., drag queens and free HIV testing for students.

L.A.M.B.D.A. President Virgillio Doniza said this event is aimed at raising visibility about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues and distributing pamphlets with information about those issues. The event is designed to bring taboo issues like immigration reform and poverty to the surface of students consciousness.

It is not just a serious event though as they pointed out. Doniza said the event is a chance for students to socialize and have fun. There is food provided free to students as well as a D.J. and large dance floor. Entertainment for the night includes drag queens and female impersonators.

“We are here to bring awareness to all these different taboo subjects and in addition to that we are provding free HIV testing to the entire student body,” Carlos Mendez, 20, vice president of L.A.M.B.D.A.,

He added that many students have come up to thank him because the health center does not provide HIV testing and this event has a 20 minute rapid result service. “It’s a win win situation for everyone,” he said.

Mendez said that the club had to fund their event because going through Associated Students would be too difficult and time consuming but the event was going well.

The event began last semester in collaboration with other clubs as a way to bring attention to taboo subjects like gay rights, poverty, war and similar issues. The L.A.M.D.A. Student Association is working in conjunction with other groups to raise awareness about all issues which get downplayed because of their unpleasant nature.
