Sun, Dec. 6, 2009: The Mounties men’s soccer team have captured the state title today after beating Taft College 2-1 at Chabot College in Hayward, CA.
Mt. SAC Head Men’s Soccer Coach Juan Sanchez said the title was a long time coming and “a big win” for the program.
“I’m excited and happy for the guys because they put in a big, big effort this year to get it and it all paid off today,” he said.
The final score was 2-1 to favor the Mounties, all points coming in the second half.
Sanchez said it was a very difficult, physical game and they had to rally back from Taft’s first goal to tie and eventually take the game.
“It wasn’t your typical possession game that we usually have because they were very defensive minded, so it made it very difficult to play our game,” Sanchez said. “In the end we pulled it off.”
Mounties Aaron Salazar and Albert Verduzco scored the two goals it took to earn the state title. Verduzco banked a shot off the goal post and defending keeper late in the match to break the tie and win the game.
Salazar, who also scored the game winner Friday against Fresno City College, was named MVP of the entire tournament Sanchez said.
“I just think that this team showed a lot of heart, a lot of character, especially in the games we were down in the playoff run and I am very proud of that character they showed,” he said.
