“Raising Awareness about Mental Health Issues,” an informative booth for students dealing with mental health issues in their lives, will be set up along Miracle Mile from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 8. Pamphlets and fliers will be handed out to students, providing information on how to cope with these issues.
“The most common mental health issues are suicide, depression, anxiety, and stress within relationships that are not necessarily romantic,” said Livier Martinez, a licensed clinical social worker from student health services.
This is the fourth year that the health service has provided this type of information booth. It is held at the beginning of each fall and spring semester.
A student who does not seek help could have their mental health issues seep into their academic life.
“If you have a relationship problem, it throws your whole world into upheaval,” said Registered Nurse and Director of Student Health Services Sandy Samples. “You can’t concentrate on your bio lecture and that’s just not good. We want to try to keep students physically and mentally healthy.”
Not all students are aware that there is a health center on campus.
Martinez said, “At student orientation, we are there. We are also on the class schedule and planner. Students gave a responsibility to seek help. We want to work with students to be able to navigate through life and better succeed.”
Other informative events are held throughout the year from September through November and can be found through the Mt. SAC Website under Student Health Center.
