The Mt. SAC defense, despite giving up 20 points, was able to hold off occasional threats from Bakersfield’s offense and topped the Renegades with a 34-20 win this past Saturday.
The Mounties (5-0), the top team in the nation was led by quarterback Nick Lamaison who went 22-of-38 for 398 yards and a touchdown pass.
With two offensive touchdowns in the first half and a defensive interception for a touchdown by Mounties safety Malcolm Murray, the Mounties’ attack gave the burgundy and white a comfortable 21-0 lead before Bakersfield got on the board to make it 21-7.
In the second half, the momentum shifted as Bakersfield responded scoring 13 unanswered points and made the Mounties lose the ball a number of times. The Renegades threatened to make it as close as 28-20 giving the crowd of 8,666 at Memorial stadium something to rave about.
But the efforts of both the Mounties offense and defense was too much for the young Bakersfield team and with a number of fumbles and interceptions from their offense, the Mt. SAC offense capitalized by scoring 10 more points and using up the clock late by running the ball frequently.
Mounties running back Bryce Mcbride had 27 carries and 92 yards. With 593 yards in total offense, the Mounties’ defense were able to hold the Renegades with only 292 in their production.
The Mounties will have a bye week before their next game at home versus Palomar Saturday, Oct. 16 with a 1 p.m. start.
