Mt SAC Men’s Water Polo team finished with a 9th place finish in the So Cal Championships on Nov. 10 after suffering an 11-9 defeat against Riverside in the all day tournament

At the South Coast Conference Water Polo Tournament that was held on Nov. 3- 5 at Mt.SAC, the men’s team (15-7 overall, 5-4 conference) played in the semi- finals In round one, it was a rainy Friday rainy morning when they picked up their first win against L.A. Trade Tech.

Mt. SAC took L.A. Trade Tech by storm with a win 14-7 which led them to round two of the semi finals.

Next they played rivals Cerritos College. The two teams started out fairly even as they tied in the first quarter 3-3. That all changed in the second quarter when Cerritos outscored Mt. SAC in the second quarter by two to tie the game at 10-10.

At the end of the fourth quarter with one minute and 18 seconds left with pressure and defense Cerritos scored the winning shot to take the game 11-10. This loss cost the men their spot in the finals. “We ran a mobile defense but Cerritos figured out our mistakes and capitalized on it and won”, said Mt. SAC Men’s water polo coach Marc Ruh.

On Saturday the Mounties battled Chaffey College for third place in the SCC tournament. Continuing their scoring pace, netting was enough to win. They took the game (9-8) and won third. Winning third place in the tournament left some fans uneasy, because there was a disputed call at the end of the game.

The final scoring shot for Cerritos appeared to be a tip, which could have given Mt.SAC the ball again, allowing them to possibly send the game into overtime said Charles (Buck ) Masten, a Mt. SAC defender.

It is not the first time this season Cerritos College outscored the Mounties, as Mt. SAC previously lost to Cerritos 10-8 in an earlier conference match on Oct. 19

“It stinks. Cerritos is our biggest rivals. Last year, they beat us twice in a row but we will see them again soon, I am proud of our team”, said Masten.
“Winning or losing does not matter to me. It is how I played the game and I played well”, said Joseph Lamson,” Mt. SAC goalie.
