The Mounties overcame two close losses against top-ranked Siskyious and Cypress before pummeling Sierra in the state title game during championship weekend in Salinas, Calif. Sunday with a 7-1 win.
The victory is the Mounties’ fourth state championship in the last seven years all won during 2003, 2005, 2007 and now 2009.
Lisa Hernandez, Stephanie Tingle, Ashlynn Booker were all named to the 2009 all-tournament team with Christie Nieto winning the best hitter award.
The most coveted crown however went to all-tournament MVP – Missy Mendoza, who smashed a grand slam home run in the bottom of the third after a walk given up by Sierra brought in Tingle with the bases loaded.
Mendoza produced key home runs in the weekend matches against Cypress and Sacramento City, both in which the Mounties were trailing going into the final innings.
