April at Mt. SAC may be known to students as the month of scholarships deadlines, admission notices, but for those involved in student government, it is known as the month of elections.
The Associated Students will hold their annual student body elections for one week, April 26-30. Students who have paid their activities fee will be able to vote online either at home, or at the official polling booth in front of building 9C via the Mt. SAC portal at myportal.mtsac.edu.
There is only one party for each category this year. Candidates were made official after attending an orientation on April 1-2.
“Unfortunately, we do have just one party, The Messengers, running for office this year. In the past years we have had more than one party or group running for office,” said Senator of Student Services Gustavo Sanchez, 19, political science major.
Although there is one party running for office this year, the elections committee has decided to offer another option for students to vote. Students will have the option to vote for “none of the above,” or skip questions if they do not want to vote for a particular
ticket or candidate.
“Just because our 2010 Associated Students Elections candidates are running unopposed, does not limit our students to only vote for these individuals. They may choose the option of not casting a vote for one member and casting one for the other if they do not feel comfortable with that candidate,” said Faculty Relations Senator Joan Tsuei, 17, business administration major.
Elections Adviser and Student Activities Coordinator, Edwin Romero agrees that the lack of student involvement or candidates in this election is concerning but hopes that next year more students will run.
Students will be voting for the executive officers for the 2010-2011 school year and each will represent different tickets.
The presidential ticket consists of the A.S. president, vice president of business, and vice president of activities. The Inter-Club Council (ICC) ticket now consists of the ICC chair, vice chair, and secretary. These tickets have three people per category and represent on ticket or one vote. Separate tickets are the candidates running for two senator pro temps and the student trustee.
Students will be able to speak with candidates and hear their platform on April 26 in building 9C from 11a.m.-12p.m.
