A non-student was handcuffed by the L.A. County Sheriff’s department in connection with a verbal altercation on the Mt. SAC campus this past Thurs., Nov. 5 as possible weapons were involved according to Director of Public Safety Jeff Parker.

The altercation took place between student services and the Campus Café. After public safety arrived, the scene moved toward Pay lot B as the suspect fled on foot.

A witness said that he saw the suspect run across the parking lot before being cut-off by public safety officials.

“I saw him running and they surrounded him with three security [guards],” Jose Elizondo, 20, broadcasting major said. “He slowed down and stopped. He probably realized that he shouldn’t be running.”

The suspect was issued a trespassing warning and was later released.

According to the suspect, who identified himself as Brandon Hairs, the altercation can be traced back to last Tues. Nov. 3 when his cousin, who does attend Mt. SAC, was verbally threatened by a group of students.

“I came up here ‘cause he said he had some problems up here,” Hairs said.

Hairs went on to say that he was accused of having a knife in his possession, but said the other group pulled out firearms at him and his cousin.

“They tried to pull it out on us right there,” Hairs said. “They didn’t take no names… we told them [the sheriffs] all of that. Crummy ass police.”

Several eye witnesses said they saw firearms, but Parker later said that he was not informed of such allegations of involved firearms and that he would be on top of it if there were.

“If I were told that there were guns on campus I wouldn’t be standing here talking to you,” Parker said.
