Soon, consumers will not have to go to the theaters or even wait for movies to come out on DVD.
The Motion Picture Association of America, the organization who represents the major movies stuidos filed a motion last year to allow a technology that broadcasts a controlled signal to show new movies during its release and 90 days prior to the release of the DVD. This new techology will allow consumers to watch a newly released movie without ever stepping into a movie theater.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Federal Communications Commision granted a petition on May 7, that will move this proposal into effect. Whether this is good for the movie industry, CEO of MPAA, Bob Pisano, said in a press release on Friday and called it, “a victory”.
With the approval of this motion, this could spell disaster for the movie theaters and could result in higher box off ticket prices on top of the already expensive prices.
