An athlete appreciation event with a Mardi Gras theme, hosted by A.S., took place from 5 p.m. -11 p.m. in front of the Student Life Center April 15.
A.S. invited all athletes on campus, about 800, to partake in a complimentary dinner, carnival games, prizes, and a three-hour dance. Snacks included: cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones. There was also an inflatable jumper, a jousting ring, a hammer game and a dunk tank.
Assistant Vice President of Student Activities Steven Solana said the purpose of the event was to raise school spirit for mountie athletics.
“We have so many great athletics teams, and we don’t recognize them,” Solana said.
Mt. SAC is located in the only state west of the Rockies to have a flying team and the community college is one of few in the nation with a number one football team, he said.
Yesenia Leon, 22, liberal studies major and A.S. publicity senator, helped to promote the event, run games and clean up.
“It was fun,” Leon said. “We had a good outcome; a lot of sport teams were here, and overall it was successful.”
Athletes interacted and met new people, Leon said. She cited an example of athletes who were playing Twister.
“They were kind of in a human pretzel and said, ‘by the way, my name [is].”
Breeona Bellamy,19, broadcast major, attended the even with 10 of her women’s basketball teammates.
“We had a good time, especially when we came out to dance,” Bellamy said. “It was like a mini club.”
Bellamy and her teammates left briefly to go support the women’s softball team by sitting in the stands at the team played LA Harbor. Mt. SAC’s team won.
“It was like a 7-1 blowout,” she said.
