Students from Mt.SAC’s performing arts division will present a play by Garon Kanin called “Born Yesterday” on April 17-18 and April 24-25 at 8 p.m.

The play begins when a junk dealer, who makes it big after supplying metal scraps for the military, arrives in Washington D.C. He hires a young magazine writer to teach his girlfriend etiquette, while he tries to gain power and influence. Love blossoms between the writer and girlfriend and they endure the junk dealer’s revengeful plot.

Director Ralph Eastman said he had a particular vision for the “traditional American comedy” and a certain girl in mind for the lead female role. Eastman approached Casey Currye, 23, a philosophy and art major to play Emma ‘Billie’ Dawn, the junk dealer’s girlfriend. Currye, who is taking a mainstage role for the first time, said she finds the experience “terrifying.”

Other student actors are excited to be part of the production. Fire Science Major Anthony Rutowicz, 24, playing Jim Devery, said he finds theatrical acting to be therapeutic and pleasurable.

“I enjoy being other people,” he said.

Admission is $12 and $9 for seniors and children under 12, and $6 for students with a Mt. SAC ID. For more information contact the Performing Arts box office at (909) 468-4050.
