Environmental Action Group for a Livable Earth is hosting Earth Week 2009 in front of Building 9C this week. The Black Student Union, Business Club, Green Club, and Alpha Gamma Sigma were some of the clubs participating April 22.
Educating students about environmental issues is EAGLE’s main goal, Kathryn Sanchez, 31, biology major and EAGLE club member said. Clubs were invited to help promote Earth Day and help educate students on conserving the environment, Sanchez said.
BSU promoted George Washington Carver’s findings on extracting chemicals from peanut butter to create substances for medicine.
English Professor John Brantingham had students involved in a Save The World Project where student art was sold for donations to the Wildlife Sanctuary, David Hong, 21, economics major said.
The Business Club introduced students to green business.
“We have tips for students on how they can save energy or do good things for the environment,” Ivan Chen, 22, business major said.
AGS was there to help promote simple ways to conserve energy. AGS will volunteer with EAGLE on Thursday to help events run smoothly, Krizia Evasco, 19, business major and president of AGS, said.
Mt. SAC’s Green Club hosted an activity where students planted penny pine trees from the Angeles National Forest.
“We brought a couple of trees to raise awareness,” Trent Wilson, 19, undecided major said. “After about six years, the trees are able to be planted in the ground. They stay in small pots that grow larger with each year.”
Mt. SAC Green Club will be giving a demo on recyclable materials April 23.
EAGLE will conclude Earth Week by showing the movie “Are we running dry?” Thursday in Building 7-1104 at 4:30-6 p.m, Sanchez said.
