Mounties win big again, 86-64
The Mt. SAC Mounties’ men’s basketball team took down L.A. Southwest in an 86-64 final in their first home South Coast Conference game on Fri., Jan. 8 in the Mt. SAC gym.
Mountie freshman Antonio Biglow put in 19 points to lead the offense as Laquenten Jones put in 18 of his own.
Biglow looked like a center to start the game putting in four of the Mounties first six points and soaring above the Southwest defense for a couple rebounds and putbacks.
However, Biglow’s scoring was quieted the rest of the half as he looked to run the offense through his team.
“Basically, I wanted to get my teammates the ball,” Biglow said. “They [other teams] always focus on me, like if it’s always about me, but it’s my team. I have good teammates.”
Jones put in 12 of his 18 in the first half, highlighted by a shot with one second left before halftime to add to the Mounties’ slim 39-31 lead.
After Southwest made a short run to start the second half and cut the Mountie lead to 39-35, Biglow and Jones went on an 11-3 run to put them up 52-38.
“We stopped gambling, [in the second half] we played more disciplined and more focused.” Mountie head coach Allen Caveness said. “We made sure they tried to beat us instead of us beating ourselves.”
The Mounties wouldn’t have gotten those scoring opportunities had it not been for Kaimyn Pruitt cleaning up the boards inside with 13. Pruitt also had 15 points to give him a double-double.
The Mountie defense buckled down, holding Southwest to 26 points in the second half.
“We tried to dig in defensively and tried to get stops,” Caveness said. “We made sure we didn’t give up any easy opportunities. We tried to make it a defensive game.”
The Mounties’ record now stands at 16-4 and their next game will be this Fri., Jan.15 at 7:30 p.m. as they will host L.A. Trade Tech in the Mt. SAC gym.
